Coaching Much? Developing 'A' Grade Coaching and Teaching Skills

This workshop challenges the idea that effective instruction is about fixing faults or polishing test performance. It focuses instead on how instructors influence the way pupils think, decide, and behave behind the wheel, both during lessons and beyond the test.

Rather than concentrating on what went wrong in a single moment, the session explores why certain driving patterns keep repeating and how instructor language, timing, and role choice shape behaviour. Coaching is presented as a deliberate, skilled conversation that develops awareness, responsibility, and judgement, not a hands-off or purely pupil-led approach.

The workshop also clarifies the difference between pupil-led and client-centred learning, showing how instructors can stay active, supportive, and safety-focused while still keeping the pupil at the centre of learning.

This is not about abandoning instruction. It’s about using it with purpose, and knowing when to teach, guide, or coach so learning transfers into real-world driving.

Who this workshop is for

This workshop is aimed at ADIs and PDIs who want to develop their coaching skills and adopt a genuinely client-centred approach without losing structure or control. It’s particularly relevant for PDIs preparing for Part 3 or early Standards Checks, and ADIs who want their coaching to feel natural, purposeful, and consistent with assessment expectations.

I really enjoyed the day session - the venue was good and I managed to avoid much of the traffic. It was well structured and it was a really nice touch being provided with all the documents, notepads etc (I wasn't expecting that and brought my own). The information was an eye opener and really thought provoking. I jotted so much down. I would definitely be in touch with Mr Seagrave if and when my standards check looms! Fantastic!

I completed this CPD training day and found it to be highly valuable. The entire day was clear, practical, and directly relevant to real lesson scenarios. The coaching framework provided tools I can apply immediately to improve learner engagement and independence. Ray is highly knowledgeable and approachable, creating a supportive learning environment.
